The world awaits yet another unforgettable Apple announcement

No other company can capture universal public attention and force droves of tech bloggers and commentators to stop in their tracks like Apple (AAPL). And we love them for it.

At 10 a.m. Eastern Standard Time tomorrow, Apple promises to reveal something new that well all never forget. What that actually will be, however, is open to endless debate and speculation. Here are the leading possibilities.

iTunes to offer subscriptions: Ever since Apple acquired music streaming service Lala for about $80 million, the speculation was that the company would use this technology to develop a robust music streaming service consumers can access from the cloud. A wishful thinking Rolling Stone magazine is hoping for an all-you-can-eat $10 monthly access to the entire iTunes music catalog.

This would be news to the music industry, according to All Things Digital.

iTunes access from any iDevice: More likely, but less revolutionary, will be the ability for consumers to access their own iTunes library from any Apple device no matter where they are. While this long-anticipated utility will be welcomed, this alone doesnt really ring as unforgettable. I guess youd expect that with 20-hours notice.

Side-scrolling survival fun in Rogue Runner iPhone game

there is also a strong in-game incentive to keep playing, thanks to several unlockables. Players can unlock extra vehicles and an entire new mode of play by collecting the cash strewn about the game.

Graphically, Rogue Runner has a cheeky 8-bit visual style that will either appeal or irritate, depending on your nostalgia level for that sort of thing. I personally think it fits the simple nature of the game, but it'd be interesting to see what one of these games looked like with a great visual engine.

While it's difficult to say that Rogue Runner stands head and shoulders above its peers, there's no mistaking this is a very fun and difficult survival running game. If you haven't tried the genre or are looking for one of the better entries in it, Rogue Runner fits the bill admirably. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it sure knows how to use it.

Archetype HD a stellar first person shooter iPad game

there is a multiplayer campaign mode, the heart of this game is the multiplayer deathmatch; you can do battle in 5-on-5 matches with anyone online. At first, I became very frustrated with the lack of matches found, as I would spend a great deal of time just waiting for players to be loaded into the match. When it did load up a match, it was usually just one or two people. Just recently, the app was updated, making it much easier to find matches to play in. Now, matches set up quickly, with all ten player-slots loaded.

The online gameplay is surprisingly smooth and lag-free. You control your character with two virtual thumb sticks; it takes some getting used to, but after a while it becomes easy to move around and aim. You can touch anywhere on the screen to shoot, including the thumb stick area itself, so its actually a good strategy to shoot by tapping the right thumb stick. It was interesting to note that, while I usually prefer to play shooters using an inverted setting, with Archetype, I preferred to leave things on the default settings. I just felt much more in control that way, and it worked out very well.

There is a separate button to throw grenades, but throwing them is a bit glitchy. When you toss a grenade, the bouncing physics are ridiculous, and you cant control how far to throw it. Sometimes, a grenade would even get stuck in a wall.

There are a decent variety of guns, and they all have their pros and cons. You can have up to two guns in your inventory and switch between them by tapping on them.

Overall, the Archetype experience is great. You cant really compare it to the quality of console shooters like Halo, but for an iPad game, its absolutely top-notch. The maps are well made, the gameplay is smooth and the variety of game types keeps things interesting. Just a few bug fixes will make Archetype HD a contender for the top spot in FPS games.

You can create an event and invite people right from the app, as well as set up reminders and customize them to suit your needs and search for an event with a handy search function. With a tap on the calendar icon in the corner, you can access all of your calendars and choose which to display. Cloud Calendar is simple, functional and clean.

Next-big-Android-thing Nexus S spotted in the wild?

tos of the phones linked with model number GT-i9020 came unofficially from Google employees. Engadget sleuths uncovered an FCC filing for that device included a sketch resembling the images seen in today's leaked images.

Further evidence: The images also resemble a mock-up created by Gizmodo a couple of weeks ago.

Android Police said that images at Flickr and Picassa reveal that Nexus S will have a five-megapixel camera. The Android coppers said the device would be a perfect fit for T-Mobile (DTEGY.PK). The stars are gradually aligning as is our desire to see this device released at long last, said Jaroslav Stekl.

InfoSyncWorld described the Nexus S as a breakthrough: the most powerful smartphone you've ever seen, as it'll likely be powered by the new Samsung Orion application processor.

Phandroid presents evidence that Best Buy (BBY) will be selling the device exclusively: Best Buys published a section on their mobile site saying that the Pure Google Nexus S is available only at Best Buy this holiday season. A link to pre-order it doesnt work, and theres a bad image with the alternate text field showing Nexus S for T-Mobile.

Photos become art with universal MobileMonet app

there is no ability to save your work in progress (but the app does use fast switching, so you can leave to check email). When saving your workoptions include camera roll, Facebook, MMS and emailthe screen will remain on your painted image, so pay close attention that it actually saves. Once you hit cancel, its gone forever.

Overall, MobileMonet is extremely easy to work with. I made several really cool looking images off my camera roll. While Im loathe to post anything to Facebook via an app, I did test out the email function. The sent photos are a bit on the low-resolution side, but they are decent in terms of inches.

Big brand iPhone apps for the shopping season

there is the Best Buy iPhone app. The app doesn't just give users run-of-the-mill product info, but includes lots of ratings, reviews and related items.

Another consumer retail giant, Walmart, also has a full range of products available via its iPhone app. And one of its unique features is a shopping list that you create and save as you browse the app's inventory. That way, you won't forget anything on your wish-list the next time you visit a Walmart store. Need help finding one? You can do that on the app, too.

But perhaps no brand has been as successful as casting itself as the queen of American chic cool, but still affordable as Target. And the company has an iPhone app to match. Users can browse it for thousands of Target products, and create wish lists for wedding registries, baby showers and other such occasions. In addition, there are plenty of price markdowns and coupon opportunities that help to keep the bill at a manageable level.

FoodMeter iPhone app gives you the good, the bad and the ugly

Not everyone wants to know what they are eating, but for those who do, there is the Food Meter: Good Food or Bad Food iPhone app (99 cents).

The Food Meter app includes a master list of thousands of food items and products, including foods available for purchase at grocery stores, as well as restaurant meals. The list is so comprehensive that I wasnt able to think up an item that I could not locate on the list.

Foods can be searched by category, such as meats, dairy, etc., or by restaurant. There is also a handy search tool which you can use to type in various food items. For really easy searching, use the apps bar code scanner.

Once you select a food, the app rates it on a nutrition meter and states whether you can feed good about eating it, or whether you should put it back on the shelf.

I decided to investigate a summer barbecue favorite, Hebrew National hot dogs. The app has nutritional content for the companys basic hot dogs, salami and sausages. The quarter-pound beef franks, for example, contain 360 calories a piece. They scored a -5 on the health meter, which strongly advised me not to eat the hot dogs.

Smartphone sales jumped 90 percent in Q3

more than 200 million smartphones during the first three quarters of 2010 as well, which was 67 percent more than the 119.6 million that were sold during the same period in 2009.

IDC also said that customers are currently buying six times as many smart phones as regular cell phones, and theyre being driven by the desire for features like mobile browsing and multimedia functions.

We told you last week how iPhone had taken the lead over other smart phones according to market research firm Canalys, but while individual phone models fall to the Apple (AAPL) iPhone in terms of market share, phones carrying Googles (GOOG) Android OS still outsell iOS-based devices two-to-one. Thats a factor of there being so many Android phones on the market, while theres only one iPhone.

And speaking of the glut of Android phones, Verizon (VZ) announced information about Motorolas new Droid Pro. The phone starts at $179 after a $100 rebate with a two-year contract and bears a full QWERTY keyboard. It shows up in Verizon stores on November 18.

Going on sale today are phones bearing Microsofts (MSFT) entry into the mobile OS market. Three phones using Windows Phone 7 are available from AT&T (T) and T-Mobile (DTEGY.PK) for $199 with a two-year contract. At AT&T, customers can get Samsungs Focus and HTCs Surround, while at T-Mobile the HTC HD7 is available.
