Why some TV networks are unhappy with Apple TV

For Time Warner Cables programming, Apple TVs 99-cent rental fee is too low.

And Time Warner isnt the only company that thinks so.

Jeff Bewkes, Time Warners CEO, said the price doesnt make sense when he spoke at the Royal Television Conference in London this week, according to cnet.com. And he went even further to say such a low price point for first-run shows could jeopardize the release of shows to TV viewers for free, because it could undermine the sale of those shows to networks.

So Time Warner, and by extension its television networks including HBO and CW, are out as far as Apple TV is concerned. You wont be renting episodes of True Blood or Supernatural on Apple TV (and thats a serious contribution to my not buying one). And NBC is out, too cnet reported last week that CEO Jeff Zucker said at the Goldman Sachs investor conference last week that a 99-cent rental fee would devalue our content. Oh, and Warner Bros. Entertainment CEO Barry Meyer also has expressed his dissatisfaction at the rental price.

RIM's BlackPad tablet computer poised to debut next week

new version of Gmail that offers limited support for priority inbox.Priority inbox is a scheme I've come to love on my desktop version of Gmail -- it sorts your inbox based on messages that it deems important -- so I'm anxious to see how it will work for mobile users. Unfortunately, the Android phone I'm using isn'tFroyo compatible yet so I'll have to wait a bit longer. The new Gmail should work on a Nexus One, HTC EVO, HTC Incredible, Motorola Droid 2 or a Motorola Droid -- assuming you've updated the firmware.

The Gmail update improves message replies, access to quoted text and easier access to long email threads among other things. However, according to Google, there's a known bug on HTC phones running Android 2.2 that Google (GOOG) is working to address.

Official Galaxy Tab video dazzles

It also includes a unique twist, adding a sign-in to "Facebook or Twitter in order to access the apps interactive features," Fell writes. We shall see how well it works, but give Cond Nast credit for continuing to push the envelope (at least what the envelope is for the moment) of what publishers can do on the iPad. It'sEpicurious app has been downloaded 3 million times.

Decision Maker by Bloomberg Sports is simple, yet deep

this week, and compared it with what the Yahoo sports predictor told me. After this week's games, the Decision Maker only made one more correct decision for me than what Yahoo did, and gave me a few wrong decisions. Thus, it performed relatively poorly this week compared with other predictor engine, but this is a very small sample size over one week and for only a handful of players.

Overall, I'm sure this app will help all managers make tough decisions. The only downside I see is that opponent matchups should be more heavily weighted, whereas team support should be less weighted. One last suggestion I would have would be to allow users to input and save their fantasy teams, so that every week they could compare all of their B-scores, instead of having to run one-on-one comparisons over and over again.

Paprika Recipe Manager tops iPad Apps of the Week

Im not saying that Noteshelf ($2.99) is going to make you give up the keyboard for your finger or a stylus, but if its something youve been yearning for, this app might be your answer. By far, Noteshelf has the smoothest rendition of handwriting of any app Ive tried. Choose your ink color and pen thickness. Even on the thinnest setting, though, the words are pretty big. Its easier to write with a stylus (I have a Pogo), but your finger will do. Tap the hand, and youll turn on wrist protection, which means you can rest your wrist on the edge of the screen without messing anything up. Your notebooks will be placed on an iBook-like bookshelf, and you can choose from several different notebook templates and paper styles.
